Trump's Tariff Threats: How the European Union Responded

In recent years President Trump felt America was at a disadvantage in trade with Europe. He realized the U.S. was buying more from Europe than the other way around. He decided to deal with this problem.

Trump wanted to put tariffs on the country’s imports. A tariff is a tax paid on products imported from outside a country. If a product is from Europe the extra cost comes from the tax. The purpose of this trade action was to make Americans decrease their Europe trade or to encourage Europe to change its trading rules.

The countries in Europe did not consider it unfair. People thought that Americans chose their products because they either had a better price or were of higher quality just as some choose their favorite café all the time.

The European Union (EU) wanted to discuss the matter with the U.S. Previously they searched for trade with China, Canada and Australia as well. Thanks to this they did not have to rely only on the U.S.

They created a list of American products they could tax whenever necessary. This was to safeguard their economy as well.

Both sides came to an agreement by imposing tariffs. It showed Europe that it is better to trade with several nations than with only one.
