Why Western Support for Ukraine's Victory Over Russia Is Crucial
Countries around the globe established agreements after several wars to ensure lasting peace. They promised to settle disputes peacefully and not to invade or change each other’s territory. The countries made these promises to try to put an end to war and protect everyone everywhere.
Yet Russia violating its agreements by ruthlessly attacking its neighbor showed that it doesn’t care about keeping its word. This major event changed the rules that countries live by. It went against the principles that make it possible for nations to get along with each other.
Friedrich Merz pointed out that this conflict is putting countries’ decisions to uphold peace to the ultimate test. He wondered whether states will keep obeying laws and treaties or if powerful countries will only listen to their own wishes. He was concerned that if Russia is allowed to take territory from another country by force, other leaders might copy that behavior. This might start a series of conflicts that endanger peace all over the world.
Many Europeans have seen the aftermath of war when bigger countries took control of weaker nations. They want to stop that from happening again.
Today many innocent people in Ukraine such as children and families are dying or getting hurt every day.
That’s why they are standing with Ukraine. They hope the future will value rules and fairness more than power.
