Why the Former Ambassador to Ukraine Resigned

Bridget Brink was the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine until last year.

Her time at the post began as the war in Ukraine and Russia intensified. She was there to give whatever help Ukraine needed.

Everything began to shift in the first months of 2025 after Trump was reelected. Once President Trump was back in office the U.S. started handling the war in a different way. She thought the new policy wasn’t right. She believed the new approach helped Russia more than it punished it while making things harder for Ukraine.

She decided she couldn’t keep working as ambassador because she didn’t support the new direction her country was going in. So in April 2025 she resigned.

In May she wrote an opinion piece for a major newspaper. She called her role as ambassador the most difficult of her career. She couldn’t go along with a plan that seemed to give the attacking nation a free pass. She saw how Russia was causing terrible suffering among innocent people including children.

She said weak nations will feel unsafe if powerful countries get away with aggression. America should never let a friend be hurt while others just watch.

She left because she opposed the new U.S. policy.
