Ukrainians React to Ban on Talks with Russia Under Putin's Leadership
Here is an easy story about the rule that Ukraine imposed.
When Russia began its full invasion the leaders of Ukraine were concerned. They believed some people or groups might try to approach Putin on their own. That could be risky. It could harm Ukraine’s chances in the war or at the negotiation table.
So in late 2022 when Putin said Russia was taking parts of Ukraine President Zelenskyy made a new rule. This rule said that no one in Ukraine could make secret deals with Russia. It didn’t block all talks with Putin — just the private or unofficial ones.
Zelenskyy said this was to stop any “shadow” talks. He wanted to keep the country united. If different people made their own deals it could hurt Ukraine.
This rule does not stop Zelenskyy from talking to Putin if he feels it’s the right time. One of his advisors said they can cancel the rule if there’s a real chance for peace.
Some people may not like this rule especially those who want to make their own deals. But most Ukrainians understand why it matters. It helps the country stay strong and speak with one voice. Talks with Russia should be official and done the right way.
