Prospects of Ukraine-Russia Talks in Istanbul: Optimism or Pessimism?
Ukraine and Russia have been fighting a long and painful war for some time. Many people hope they can end the fighting and start talking about peace instead.
But what should a “good” peace deal include?
For Ukraine, peace means getting all its land back and feeling safe in the future. Many people would see it as a big loss if any land was given up in talks.
Russia might see a good deal as one that lets it keep some of the land it controls now. Another condition is keeping Ukraine out of NATO and similar groups. Russia also wants the West to remove sanctions that are hurting its economy.
It’s clear both sides want very different things.
If they can’t agree, the war might just freeze. That means the battles stop, but peace doesn’t really come. Ukraine would still need to stay ready and spend money on safety. Russia would stay in areas where it’s not welcome and face big costs too.
Ukrainians have shown they won’t give up. Getting their land back matters to many of them.
Real peace needs both sides to truly want it. Ukraine must feel strong and safe before making any deal.
That’s the hope.
