Is Trump Close to Finalizing a Trade Deal with China?

Some time ago, the United States saw the trade deal with China as unfair. There was a lot of US spending on Chinese goods and China was not following the rules, mainly with technology.

In 2018, President Trump added extra taxes to many goods made in China. China responded by putting taxes on American goods too. This led to what people called a 'trade war.'

They tried to reduce the conflict. At the start of 2020, the US and China made a “Phase One” deal. China agreed to buy more farm goods from the US while the US removed some tariffs. But the main problems were not fixed and most tariffs stayed.

When Biden became president, the focus changed. The main goal became competing with China and working with other countries. Still, most tariffs remain.

As of May 2025, there is still no major trade deal. Top officials from both countries continue to meet. For example, US Treasury Secretary Yellen meets with Chinese leaders. But these talks are mostly about managing issues and handling the relationship, not signing a final agreement. Since these problems are hard to solve, a quick solution is not expected.
