Can Peace Be Negotiated with Russia?

It is difficult to think about peace between Ukraine and Russia. It is hard to believe in any promises when history is concerned. Chechnya in the 1990s made peace with Russia. But soon enough Russia bombed the capital of Chechnya and destroyed a large portion of it. That shows peace with Russia is not always permanent.

Ukraine also has a long history with Russia. They wrote documents promising to be friends and support each other. However when Russia attacked Ukraine it broke those promises. President Putin does not care about what he signed. He seems to do whatever he wants.

Because of this Ukraine has trouble trusting Russia. Russia says it wants peace but Ukraine fears it could be a trick. They believe Russia only understands strength. So to stay safe Ukraine must be strong.

For Ukraine getting strong is not just a choice. It feels necessary. They believe peace will only come if they can protect themselves. Trust was broken before so they don’t want to take risks. Ukraine wants peace but not the kind of peace that leaves them open to attack again.
