How Russia's Victory Day Parade on May 9th Will Reflect the Ongoing War in Ukraine
The date of Victory Day in Russia is 9 May. The win in World War Two is generally remembered in a big event with a huge parade in Moscow. This year is different because Russia is still engaged in a war in Ukraine.
During a war people are wondering how the parade will go forward. "Bring earplugs" offers a strange warning from a top Ukrainian official. This year is also a special anniversary for Russia so President Putin has invited leaders of friendly countries to come take part.
Perhaps the parade is in danger. Meanwhile other countries have sent even stronger weapons while Ukraine now has long range missiles. While Moscow has strong air defenses Ukrainian drones and missile strikes may find gaps to get through. The loud explosions in the sky may scare the guests even if they don’t hit anything.
Ukrainian drones have even reached the Kremlin before. Putin called for a three day break from fighting to stay safe. Ukraine’s president though said no and asked for a full 30 day ceasefire to save lives.
Nobody knows whether Ukraine will attack or not. It makes the day very tense. This year’s Victory Day will not be normal.
