If the Uzi submachine gun was available during Ww2 would it have any distinct advantages in certain situations over other weapons currently available?
The Uzi is a piece of crap. It was my primary weapon when I was in an armored reconnaissance unit in the German Army.
It's terribly inaccurate, even for a submachine gun, and also not very reliable. The only advantage it would have over “other weapons currently available”, now or during WWII, is when your enemy is using the Uzis while you are shooting with something else.
During my basic training with an Uzi on my back. It might be a good weapon for police or paramilitary groups but not for combat units. I’m the guy on the left. This photo was made on a shooting range in the early morning hours and we are warming our cold fingers on the replaced barrel of a 20mm autocannon.
Of course, the Uzi is very simple and therefore cheap to produce, but this won't help you on the battlefield when your safety mechanism doesn't work properly, the folding stock collapses once again, or you can't hit a damned thing at one hundred meters: “Well, look at the bright side, soldier! It's easy to produce!”
A much better SMG is the Heckler&Koch MP-5: accurate, reliable, and safe. Short: everything the Uzi isn't.
